As of July 1, 2015, driving uninsured in Tennessee became costlier, with the fine for driving without the proper insurance increasing from $100 to $300. From January 1, 2016 and onwards, the police could legally have your auto immediately towed if you cannot produce proof of valid insurance. Up until January 1, 2017, Tennessee will be creating a new online insurance verification program. Once implemented, the program will find drivers who have not purchased valid insurance through their vehicle registration information. Owners without insurance will be unable to renew their vehicle’s registration.
